Blue Chihuahua refers to a chihuahua that has a “blue” or grey tone to their coat color. This coloring is considered rare and highly valued. In some countries, especially in Japan, a Blue Chihuahua can cost up to $10,000!
So what does a blue chihuahua look like? Blue Chihuauas can be all grey, but more commonly have two-color combinations such as grey and white. There are 29 different colors that are possible on the coat of the Chihuahua, and Blue is one of the rarest…and it is prized by many Chihuahua aficionados. Usually, you will see a Blue with other colors, such as a Blue with white or tan markings. As such, a solid Blue Chihuahua is even much more rare than one with two tone or tri-color markings.
The Blue Chihuahua can be seen in both the long and short hair Chihuahua variety. The possibility of the gene being present for this amazing coat color is not more common in either variety Chihuahua.
What makes a Blue Chihuahua so valuable in the dog breeding world?
A Blue Chihuahua doesn’t necessarily have a blue coat. The coat color is more grey to silvery grey with hints of blue highlights. Breeding a Blue Chihuahua is not an easy task. It’s all about combining different colored Chihuahuas including fawns and chocolate browns. However, the Blue Chihuahua is the result of a recessive gene, and both the parents must have the blue gene in their ancestries to produce a Blue Chihuahua. And even then, the puppy might not have a full blue coat. It’s common for the coat to be blue and white.
The Blue Chihuahua has all of the other temperaments and traits of a more standard color Chihuahua. As always, only purchase Blue Chihuahuas from a responsible knowledgeable breeder.
